Did you know that over one billion people worldwide do not have enough food to eat? Soil is the foundation of our food system, yet it is being polluted and degraded at an alarming rate.
Why Is Soil Important?
Not only does it provide the foundation for all plant life, but it’s also home to a staggering variety of microbes—up to one billion per teaspoon of soil, in fact. And those microbes are responsible for essential processes, like decomposition and nutrient cycling. In other words, without healthy soil, we wouldn’t be able to grow food or support any other kind of life on Earth.
Soil is under threat from a number of different sources, though. Pollution from agriculture, industry, and urbanisation can damage soil, and overuse can lead to degradation and nutrient depletion.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 90% of the earth’s topsoil is likely to be at risk by 2050.
How Compostable Products Can Help
One way we can help protect this vital resource is by using Bonnie Bio’s compostable products. They are made from plant materials and break down into natural compounds when they are exposed to sunlight, water or microorganisms. This process does not pollute soil as traditional plastic products do. In fact, compostable products actually help to restore nutrients back into the soil. This is important for growing healthy plants.
World Soil Day, 5 December, is a chance for us to raise awareness about this vital resource and take action to protect it.
